Practice outline

Established on Australia Day 2005, my firm allows me to focus on what I do best and enjoy doing most: providing a professional, personal service to a client base that is representative of the many sectors of the technology industry.

My firm offers a full corporate and commercial legal service to companies that are engaged in a number of complementary (and converging) industries:

  • information and communication technology (IT and ICT)
  • telecommunications: infrastructure, wireless, VoIP, 3G software and services
  • e-commerce / e-business: on-line delivery of products and services
  • biotech / pharmaceutical / life sciences: bio-informatics and theranostics
  • entertainment / multi-media.

Some of these companies are Australian SME’s, some are multi-nationals listed on the ASX, LSE, NASDAQ and other Exchanges. All have a commitment to excellence and innovation.

History

From 1986 through to 2004 I worked at top-tier law firms in Sydney, Melbourne, London and Hong Kong, in particular working for clients that wish to protect, develop and commercialise their intellectual capital. As a result, I have had the opportunity to work on significant  transactions throughout Australasia, the UK, Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the US. However, the business model, especially the structure and level of fees charged by these top-tier firms, convinced me that there must be a better way to work with my clients on a more flexible, personal and pro-active basis. My firm now enables me to offer this service and to add demonstrable value to my clients’ businesses.

Strategy: focus on deliverables

My firm’s model is based on a strict focus on deliverables, not on timesheets and chargeable hours. Never will my clients receive an invoice based on “time and disbursements” (unless they request that type of arrangement). The model works for clients who want me to be part of their team and expect me to know their business just as much as the technicalities of the law.

Terms of reference: flexibility

The specific scope of my firm’s engagement is designed to match the requirements of each client and each project. Flexibility is the key word. My standard terms of reference are a “shopping list” from which clients may pick-and-choose and prioritise the services that my firm offers.

Alliances

Importantly, my firm also has strong alliances with merchant banks, fund managers/VC’s and brokers who, like me, focus on the IT industry. By pooling our respective skills, contacts and experience we work as a team to help technology companies to formulate and realise their business plans, whatever they may be. This may involve establishing vertical or horizontal alliances/partnerships/joint ventures, setting up overseas offices, appointing manufacturers and distributors, through to managing IPO’s, capital raisings and listings.
